A long-term exposure to sunlight can lead to problems like sunburn, skin aging and even skin cancer. This is the reason that many people prefer to stay indoors and avoid direct sunlight.

But you should not completely avoid the sun. It is because a limited exposure to sun gives numerous health benefits.

Sunlight is the easiest and healthiest source to get vitamin D – the “sunshine vitamin”. It is almost as important to life as oxygen. With the help of sunlight, the body produces vitamin D.

For this, you don’t have to tan or burn your skin. An exposure which makes your skin a bit red produces an approx. 10,000 to 25,000 IU of vitamin D in the body.

Although sunlight has many health benefits but make sure to enjoy it at a limit.

Now let’s have a look at how sunshine benefits your overall health!

Supports Healthy Bones :

Sunlight is important for healthy and strong bones. It helps your body produce vitamin D which stimulates the absorption of bone-strengthening calcium.

This helps in reducing the risk of fractures, bone diseases, and osteoporosis.

Good for Eye Health :

The vitamin D3 plays a main role in preventing age-related macular degeneration, which is the common cause of blindness in old age.

It helps the aging eyes by reducing inflammation and improving visual function. For eye health, don’t try to look directly at the sun.

Follow these simple steps:-

  • All you have to do is, stand in a sunny place in the early morning. Don’t wear glasses or contact lenses.
  • Then, close your eyes and let the sunlight fall on the eyelids.
  • Feel the warmth of the sun rays on your eyes and in a slow manner move them up and down. Also the right to left and clockwise to anticlockwise directions.
  • Try doing this for 5 minutes and then rub your palms and place them over your eyelids for five minutes.

Note: – Don’t stay in bright sunlight for a long time.

Sunlight helps to make your immune system stronger. As it leads to the production of vitamin D which supports proper functioning of the T cells that help in immune defenses.

Improves Metabolism :

Sunlight helps to speed up the metabolic rate of your body which further maintains a healthy weight. According to various study reports, it is seen that the ultraviolet radiation suppresses obesity. It is said that after sun exposure, the skin releases a compound known as nitric oxide. This compound gives similar obesity and diabetes slowing effects.

Sunlight is beneficial for the people having a heart problem or the ones who are at a higher risk of heart disease.

The best time for exposure to sunlight is early morning for 10-15 minutes. Make sure to avoid the direct sunlight during the peak hours of the day between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If not possible, then do apply a good amount of sunscreen on the exposed parts of the body.
